Omaha is a large city in the U.S. state of Nebraska, and the county seat of Douglas County. It is located in the Midwestern United States on the Missouri River, about 10 miles (15 kilometers) north of the mouth of the Platte River.
In 2020, it was ranked as a global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network with “sufficiency” status. Omaha is known as the “Gateway to the West” because it was founded along the Missouri River at a crossing called Lone Tree Ferry.
Omaha is home to the headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies: conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway; one of the world’s largest construction companies, Kiewit Corporation; insurance and financial firm Mutual of Omaha; and Union Pacific Corporation, the United States’ largest railroad operator.
Some of Omaha’s most prominent landmarks are its architectural marvels, three of which are among the 30 largest architecture firms in the United States – HDR, Inc., DLR Group, Inc., and Leo A Daly. Then there’s Warren Buffett, nicknamed the “Oracle of Omaha”, who is regularly ranked one of the richest people in the world and is one of the city’s most prominent businessmen.
