hreflang - SEO Glossary

Hreflang is a URL which identifies the language and country of origin of the website. It helps search engines to understand the language and country where the website is targeted.

It is also used by Google to determine whether the site is optimized for different languages. The hreflang tag can be added in two ways:

– Using the <link> element on individual pages:

<link rel=”alternate” hreflang=”x-default” href=”yoursite.com“>

The hreflang tag can be placed within the head element, usually in the <head> section.

Here’s how it works:

Google crawls all of the websites on the internet and looks at all of their HTML code (or website code). The more unique words and phrases appear in these codes, the higher ranking they’ll receive when people search for them online. After crawling each site, Google parses out all of its HTML code into individual pieces called entities
